Two large marble busts show Goethe’s parents, Johann Caspar and Catharina Elisabeth Goethe. The Frankfurt sculptor Anton Carl Rumpf created them in 1899. As a model he used two relief portraits by the artist Johann Peter Melchior, which had been made in 1779. Melchior, who worked at the nearby Höchst porcelain manufactory, was friends with Johann Wolfgang Goethe.
