Goethe-House

Hallway

The clock was made in the workshop of one of Goethe’s relatives who was a clockmaker. When Goethe visited Frankfurt in 1814, at the age of 65, during an evening stroll he walked by his family house, which at the time was already owned by someone else. “The house clock struck inside”, he reports. “It was a very familiar sound”. Memories of his youth flooded back, especially since Goethe was working at the time on his autobiographical novel From My Life. Poetry and Truth.
