The Blue Room owes its name to the wallpaper in the fashionable colour of “bleu mourant” – a ‘dying’ or fading blue. This was the dining room of the Goethe family, which consisted of the father Johann Caspar, the mother Catharina Elisabeth, Johann Wolfgang, and his sister Cornelia. Five other children died early.

Close family friends were also received in the Blue Room. While socializing at table, family and friends ate well and were happy to indulge in the cellar’s valuable inventory of wines.

A round dining room table stood not only at the service of meals but also of literature: Here, a scribe’s iron hand made a clean copy of Goethe’s first play “Goetz of Berlichingen with the Iron Hand”.
