The younger brother of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm was known predominantly as a printmaker and draftsman. One of his rare portraits shows Meline von Guaita, the younger sister of Clemens and Bettine Brentano. Taking its orientation from the style of the Nazarenes, Grimm works in fine colouristic nuances, accurate and contoured, more linear than painterly; the dress and hat are also reminiscent of Renaissance portraits. He mitigates the image’s calm austerity through the almost tangible representation of the materials: velvet, feathers, and delicate lace.
