The man who sold his shadow
Chamisso wrote his fairy-tale-like story in the first person to make it seem like a factual report. In a letter preceding the story, he playfully explains that he was given the manuscript by “a strange man with a long grey beard”, dressed in a “black kurtka” (a uniform-like jacket), with “a botanical case” at his side. This description matches the figure shown in the frontispiece.
