The English translation shortens the original title and wrongly attributes the text to Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. This mix-up shows just how much Chamisso’s play with authorship and editorship confused readers. The eight etchings by the British caricaturist George Cruikshank gave this edition its special appeal.
