The man who sold his shadow
This portrait by an unknown artist shows the writer and naturalist Adelbert von Chamisso, probably around the time that he wrote and published his best-known work, Peter Schlemihl. His youthfulness is emphasized not only by his long curls and soft features, but also by the subtle, delicate pastel technique. Chamisso’s wide, open collar and slightly averted, pensive gaze lend the likeness an informal, private touch.
