Günderrode’s third book was being prepared for publication when she committed suicide. She had called it Melete, after the muse of meditation. Because Creuzer feared that one of the sections – a fictional correspondence titled “Letters of Two Friends” – could be read as a literary dialogue between himself and Günderrode, he had the edition destroyed. Only one copy of the work survived.
