No place on earth
In No Place on Earth, the East German author Christa Wolf presents a fictional encounter between Karoline von Günderrode and Heinrich von Kleist, taking tea in Winkel on the Rhine in June 1804. The two are portrayed as outsiders who feel suffocated by social constraints and a lack of freedom. The novel was published in both East and West Germany in 1979. Wolf’s references to her own time and the role of the artist under socialism were deliberate.
