No place on earth
In his song cycle Das Rot (The Red) Wolfgang Rihm captures the intensity of Günderrode’s poetry and its nearness to death in Romantically inspired tones:
When I see the evening reds, friend,
blushing deep in the west,
Smiling gravely, wistfully smiling and dying away,
Oh, then I must ask why
It is so dim and dark out,
But it is silent and cries pearling dew down upon me.
