When Schiller received the first sample pages of the novel in the early summer of 1797, he wrote with some surprise to Goethe: “I really must wonder at the fact that, by merely dilettantish means, our women manage to acquire a certain writing skill for themselves that comes close to art.” He went on to publish the first eight letters of the novel in his magazine Die Horen, giving the text wide publicity.
