Juncker’s scholar in his study is surrounded by books, papers, and a globe. In his research he makes use of vessels with mysterious contents. In the 18th century, the line between scholar, alchemist, and magician was not yet clearly drawn. Juncker turned to this subject several times and Goethe, who knew this pictorial motif from his childhood, had his Faust seek knowledge on the boundary between science and magic.
