The writer and art connoisseur Hüsgen was the most important chronicler of Frankfurt’s artistic life in the 18th century. In his Nachrichten von Franckfurter Künstlern und Kunst-Sachen, published in 1780, he recorded the contents of Johann Caspar Goethe’s art collection, among others. He also occupied himself with Albrecht Dürer’s prints and in 1778 published the important first catalogue of his engravings. Hüsgen’s father designed the “wondrous” astronomical clock that Goethe admired as a child and that has been at the Goethe House in Frankfurt since 1933.
