Special exhibition: “I’ve written from the heart”. Close communication in the writings of Bettina Brentano, Rahel Levin Varnhagen and Karoline von Günderrode (31.01. - 01.06.2025) in the manuscript studio of the romanticism exhibition (3rd floor).
Bettina Brentano, Rahel Levin Varnhagen and Karoline von Günderrode were three of the most important female Romantic authors. Each in their own way, they pursued the ideal of perfect understanding in their writing. The scenes presented here show the successes and failures of their quest and are arranged in three consecutive chapters. They reveal the linguistic strategies and innovations used by the women to address the difficulties of highly personal communication. Their texts form a tapestry depicting the drama of intimacy.
The exhibition is curated by Alexander Knopf (Heidelberg/Copenhagen), Frederike Middelhoff (Frankfurt am Main) and Joanna Raisbeck (Oxford).
